Topic: LOOKING UNTO JESUS
Text: Heb.
12:1-2; Isa. 53:10-12
Aim:
"To
encourage Christians to constantly and consistently depend and rely on
Christ"
Introduction:
One
of the common dangers in Christian life is ‘RELAPSE’. In John 6:67, Jesus asks
His disciples a very deep question, “Will
You Also Go Away”? Jesus knows His disciples, and the disciples also know
Jesus, but still He ask. Many went back and never walked with Him again, that's
why he asked the question. Many Christians are doing many good things and also
ministry, but they are not walking with the Lord! There is a ‘RELAPSE’. Even in
the early church a similar situation was seen. The Early Christian were at the
verge of a Relapse, they were discouraged and wanted to give up…why? There are
2 reasons:
1.
Severe
Persecution
2.
Delay
in the fulfillment of the Divine Promises (the delayed promises were: Jesus’
immediate return, resurrection of believers and a New Jerusalem)
The
writer to Hebrews is encouraging the church and Christians to hold on and not
to give up hope. This chapter was very instrumental to revive the Christians of
that day, each of us are encouraged to run, Looking unto Jesus.
Discussion
Questions:
1.
Why
should we run?
2.
In
line with the above phrase "Looking Unto Jesus",
discuss what you can deduce from it:
Ø We look to Him because of WHO HE
IS? Dan. 2:21; Prov. 19:21, 21:1; Ps. 139:5-6; Isa. 43:2; Rom. 8:38,39
Ø We look to Him because of WHAT
HE DID? Deut. 31:8,9; Josh. 1:9,10; Ps. 86:17; John 3:16, 14:16,17;
3.
How
can we look unto Jesus? Micah 7:7; Acts
4:10, 12; Rom. 6:4; Luke 3:16; Acts 9:34
Conclusion:
Looking
to Jesus is the best expedient to destroy our inordinate (excessive, undue,
extravagant)regard to this present world. Christ was dead to it, and separate
from it; and He says to His followers, "Ye are not of the world, even as I
am not of the world" (John 17:16).
A glance of His glory, and a sense of interest in His favour, will make us
indifferent similar to its smiles and its frowns; and all the glittering
objects that men pursue with such greed, will appear as unworthy of our
affections.
There
is one more advantage to be expected from looking to Jesus; an advantage of
such magnitude, that is, ability to meet death with calmness and joy. Here is a
triumph peculiar to the gospel; a triumph far superior to those of kings and
conquerors; a triumph over the king of terrors. Looking to Jesus, who has borne
the whole of the punishment due to our sins, we are no longer to consider it as
penal. (2 Timothy
1:10).
Memory Verse:
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give
you rest.
