THEME:
GOD OF ALL POSSIBILITIES
TOPIC:
ENCOUNTERING POSSIBILITIES – HOW CAN?
TEXT:
LUKE 1:26-38
INTRODUCTION
Our text is similar to some Old
Testament texts in which there is a divine annunciation of a special birth: of
Ishmael (Genesis 16:7-13); Isaac (Genesis 17:1-21; 18:1-15); Samson (Judges
13:2-25). Such parallels might suggest the real focus is not on the person to
whom the announcement is made but on the child who is to be born: he will be
great; he will be called the Son of the Most High; he will be given the throne
of David and will reign over the kingdom of Israel (Jacob) forever (Luke
1:32-33). Mary is identified here as the “favored one” (Luke 1:28) and as one
who has “found favor with God” (Luke 1:30). Later, in the verses that follow
this text, she will be described as “blessed” among women (Luke 1:42). A
promise so great; Mary being the one whose womb is to be used to fulfill such
promise is a VIRGIN. The mystery was too hard for Mary to fathom, therefore,
the question – ...“How can this be,
since I am a virgin?” This may not be a question of doubt, but of genuine
concern and high regard for natural laws and processes.
QUESTIONS
FOR DISCUSSION
1. Discuss the difficulties of
possibilities in the text (Luke 1:31, 42)
2. How does our fears affect the
move of God (Luke 1:34, 35)
3. List and discuss God's potent
means of interacting with human difficulties? (Luke 1:26, 30, 35)
4. How can we enjoy endless
possibilities? (Luke 1:35, 37)
CONCLUSION
God in His benevolence has made
provision for man to enjoy endless possibilities. Life can be beautiful when it
is all about God. God can!
