1Tim. 2:
8: I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. Reference:Ps 134:2; Isa 1:15; Mal 1:11; Joh 4:21
9: In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; {broided: or, plaited}. Reference:1Pe 3:3
10: But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. reference:1Pe 3:4
Paul's address to Timothy was specifically directed to the Gentile women and a step further in attaining a deeper Christian walk with God.
I will therefore that men pray everywhere: Paul refers us back to 1Ti
2:1.........
Everywhere. In all places of public
worship, Any place peculiar and reserved for God's worship and praise.............
Lifting up holy hands: This indicates an attitude in
prayer. The hands lifted up must be sanctified to holy deeds prior before such godly task be taken.........
Without wrath and doubting: Wrath would be unfit for prayer. So would doubt also. Doubt shows an acute distrust in the personality of God.
In
like manner, that women also:When they come to the public
worship, let them not spend their thoughts in adorning their bodies, but
adorn themselves in modest apparel. In simple attire which would not attract
unwanted attention. Such attention will end up distracting others and dividing the household of God.........
With shamefacedness: A shrinking from all that is
indelicate.........
Sobriety: Self-restraint; not yielding to vain
impulses...........
Not with braided hair: The Gentile women were much
given to arranging the hair in plaits over the head, with bands of gold.
Such vain and idle show at worship is forbidden, as well as the wearing
of pearls, or costly array. In the house of God a display is not
comely......
But, There is another adorning which better becomes godly women. Let their lives be adorned by kindly, helpful deeds.........
